A (not so enjoyable) Flap experience (Apr. 28th, 2004)
Did a flight refreshment today on a C-150 spamcan. After some 60deg threesixties and a couple of lazy eights I approached for the first touch 'n go. Wheels touched the concrete, throttle firewalled, flaps up, flaps Up! FLAPS UP! UP!!! Flaps remained fully dployed extending like barndoors into the slipstream, end of runway rushed towards me, the towering trees at the runway end grew bigger and bigger. There were two chioces: (1) a steep turn towards the runway before the trees hit me (2) limp over the trees, across the River Rhine and gain some altitude over free terrain. Looking back I'm surprised how cool the brain worked in this situation (maybe like the last seconds before death when you see the whole live absolute clearely). I decided against the turnaround and limped with airspeed at the left side of the 40mph mark and no visible climb rate barely over the trees. After some very careful threesixties I gained sufficient altitude to make a normal landing with the wind.
What is the lesson from this?
My electric flap spindle drive will carry a 4" emergency handwheel. When I turn this aluminum disc I can retract or deploy the flap without any electric juice.
